Designer

Arne Emil Jacobsen (1902 – 1971) left an indelible mark on the world of design as a Danish architect and furniture designer. Renowned for his significant contributions to architectural functionalism and iconic chair designs, Jacobsen's impact resonates globally. Born in Copenhagen, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under the influence of architects Kay Fisker and Kaj Gottlob.

Jacobsen gained early recognition in 1925 when he won a silver medal for chair design at the Paris Art Deco fair. Establishing his own office in 1926, he designed notable projects such as the Rothenborg House and a seaside resort in Klampenborg. Overcoming initial public resistance to his avant-garde style, Jacobsen continued to innovate, creating landmarks like the Bellevue Theatre, Århus City Hall, and the SAS Royal Hotel, showcasing his mastery of large-scale projects.

Beyond his architectural legacy, Jacobsen's furniture designs, crafted in collaboration with Fritz Hansen and Louis Poulsen, have become iconic. Notable pieces like the Ant chair, Seven Series, Egg chair, and Swan chair embody modern needs with their light, compact, and stackable designs. Jacobsen's influence on modern design endures, and his numerous awards, including the C.F. Hansen Medal in 1955, underscore his lasting legacy.
